Jumpstart Your System with Spirulina

This post is excerpted from an article entitled "Natural Energy For You and Your Little House" by Nancy Webster which appeared in Beeyoutiful's Spring 2013 catalog.  Nancy Webster is a homeschool mother of eight and leader of the Southern Middle Tennessee chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation. She is an ardent researcher on nutrition and alternative approaches to good health. Nancy lives with her family on their “partially working” farm in Tennessee.

"Even if you’ve made great changes in favor of eating more nutrient-dense, whole foods, it also takes superfoods to help your body stay in top health. These days, pollution, stress, your past history of junky eating and pharmaceutical use all work against every glass of raw milk or organic veggies you consume. Superfoods, though, are super full of nutrition, and because they are nature-made, your body can easily absorb and use their goodness.

"So where do you start with adding superfoods to your diet? Which one will jumpstart your system and help you feel like washing windows after folding four loads of laundry, cooking for a crowd, and/or a long day at the office? Spirulina!

"This humble, algae-like plant (called a cyanobacteria) is one of the most potent protein and nutrient sources available. And boosting energy is just one of its many abilities. Spirulina also works to relieve congestion, sniffling, and sneezing caused by all types of allergies. It boosts the immune system, helps control high blood pressure and cholesterol, protects from cancer, and more.

"How does spirulina come by this impressive resume? As a source of protein, it is 65 percent complete protein. By comparison, beef is only 22 percent complete. Spirulina contains all the essential amino acids, plus some, and provides a healthy portion of Omega-3 (like in salmon) as well as Omega 6 and 9. Omega-6 is gamma linoleic acid (GLA), known to be anti -inflammatory (for arthritis relief!), to increase fat burn after exercising, and to make beautiful hair and nails.

"Spirulina is high in chlorophyll, which removes toxins from the blood and boosts the immune system. Chlorophyll and iron are a great friend to pregnant mamas, as the tendency for anemia at this season of life is significant. That’s why spirulina is a main ingredient in Beeyoutiful’s SuperMom multi-vitamins. The easily absorbable, non-constipating iron content of spirulina is 58 times that of raw spinach and 28 times that of raw beef liver. Spirulina is replete with vital minerals most of those pretty veggies at the store can’t provide any more, thanks to being grown in depleted soils.

"If weeds get the best of your garden, or your kids (or you!) don’t like vegetables, or you simply wish you could juice but just can’t swing it, handy, mineral-rich spirulina is the way to get your cancer-fighting daily quota of greens. Calcium and phosphorus are two of the major mineral players in this fantastic superfood. If these minerals are lacking or out of balance in the blood, tooth decay is in your near future. So spirulina is also recommended as part of a tooth remineralization program. And because the calcium content is more than 26 times that of milk, spirulina is excellent for children, the elderly, and pregnant women, and especially for folks who are casein- or lactose-intolerant.

"If your nerves are on edge or your digestion is off, you need spirulina for all the B complex vitamins it contains. Our gut is our “second brain,” and it needs the B’s to work well. Do you have candida? Most people do these days, and spirulina has been shown to encourage and support the growth of healthy bacterial gut flora, which helps keep candida overgrowth under control. Because candida will cause and worsen symptoms, this is especially important if you have an autoimmune disease such as Crohn’s, chronic fatigue, lupus, or fibromyalgia.

"So how much spirulina do you need to get you going? A therapeutic serving size is between three and five grams, preferably broken up throughout the day. Since six tablets of Beeyoutiful brand spirulina equal three grams, a bottle will last one person approximately one month. For more serious health conditions, take the higher amount, but build up slowly to this dose to avoid detox reactions."

Essential Oils for Spiders

These are a few of the essential oils spiders hate most:
Orange
Lemon
Lavender
Cassia
Peppermint
Citronella
Eucalyptus

Thanks to Steve Tallent for this spider repellent recipe and how-to:
"A mixture of any or all of them should do the trick. I personally take no chances and mix a bit of all of them together in varying ratios until it smells good. Grab a reusable spray bottle and squirt a bit of natural dish soap (just a tiny bit, not much is needed), a small splash of white vinegar, pour in the essential oil mixture and add a couple cups of water. Shake thoroughly and then go to town spraying down any and all surfaces that you want protected. I’ve been known to spray down the floor around our beds as an extra measure of protection. We have diffused eucalyptus essential oil in high concentrations in closed-off rooms for a few hours at a time and come back to find all the spiders in there curled up dead. It’s well worth it to get rid of a known spider issue inside a house!"

Paraben-Free: Why Does it Matter?

Last week we introduced our
Paraben-Free Moisturizer.
Paraben-Free.
Why does it matter?
What's a paraben anyway?

Parabens are petroleum-based preservatives.
They're commonly used in cosmetics and personal care items.
Read a shampoo bottle and you'll probably find parabens in the ingredient list:
methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben to name a few.

Thanks to parabens,
your shampoo, lotion and deodorant will last for years.
They're also entering your body when you use these products.
Research has shown that your body may absorb as much as
five pounds of cosmetic chemicals each year.

Check your facial cream and moisturizer labels.
See any parabens there?
When the moisturizer is absorbed into your skin,
so are the parabens.
When the parabens enter your bloodstream,
they mimic estrogen,
sometimes causing hormonal imbalance.
Parabens also commonly cause allergic reactions
and contact dermatitis.

We are delighted to offer you an alternative
to lotions and moisturizers with chemical preservatives.
Try our Paraben-Free Moisturizer!

Paraben-Free Moisturizer
comes in an airless pump container,
so there's absolutely no waste--
no moisturizer left in the bottle to be thrown away!
You'll enjoy every drop of this moisturizer!

Lavender Oil

http://smithfamilyresources.com/products/lavenderoil

Lavender just may be the most useful essential oil of all and definitely one to consider adding to your aromatherapy collection!

Lavender is a great massage oil!  Lavender's anti-inflammatory properties help to relax and relieve sore, tense muscles.  Massage several drops of lavender oil into your feet. You can also mix a few drops of lavender with almond oil for an overall body massage.  Even babies benefit from a lavender oil massage!

For a soothing soak, combine 4-5 drops of lavender oil with a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil and add to a warm bath.

Suffering from insomnia?  A couple of drops of lavender oil on your pillow will often bring on a restful sleep. You might also use lavender oil in a diffuser beside your bed.

Lavender also has anti-fungal properties. Apply a few drops to toenail fungus or athlete's foot once or twice daily.  Within days, the lavender begins to break down the cell wall of the fungus and prevents new growth. If the skin becomes dry from this treatment, add a few drops of almond oil to moisturize.

Lavender promotes quick regeneration of skin cells, so burns and wounds heal more rapidly when treated with lavender oil.

For regular use, even when you have no physical or emotional complaints, use lavender oil as a perfume by dabbing it on your pulse points. This is far preferable to synthetic fragrances which can soak in and harm your body.

Beeyoutiful's pure lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the lavender plant.  Although it is considered safe to use internally as well as undiluted on skin and in bath water, it's always best to test for skin allergy or sensitivity first.  Apply a drop diluted with a bit of olive or almond oil to the inside of your elbow.  If there is no reaction after 10 minutes, you are probably not hypersensitive to lavender.

Start enjoying the benefits of lavender today!

Do you need a miracle?

Do you have chapped lips?
Do you have dry skin?
A minor cut or scrape or a burn?
Do you have a little one with a skinned knee?

Did you say yes to any of these questions?
Then, you need a miracle!

Well, actually, you need Miracle Skin Salve!

Miracle's primary ingredients are coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, bee propolis, organic plantain leaf, organic comfrey root, organic calendula flowers, and essential oils of lavender and rosemary. Beeyoutiful's suggested uses: "Apply directly to minor skin irritations or injuries. Miracle is designed to promote tissue repair for minor cuts, scrapes, bites, burns and some skin maladies like psoriasis, eczema, cold sores and skin fungi."

The Last Text

I don't usually post things like this, but this video really moved me.  I don't text while I drive.  I've taught my teenaged drivers not to text while driving.  But every once in a while, I'll pick up my phone and read a text.  I'm sorry to admit it, but it's true.  After watching this video, I won't do that again.

Ultimate Defense is Beeyoutiful's finest probiotic, designed with embedded predigested food sources for the bacteria. Ultimate Defense is specifically designed to establish complete, lasting colonies of intestinal flora in a world that sterilizes, processes and denaturalizes all food sources.

Ultimate Defense is a combination of 13 different bacteria, fermented greens to feed them as colonies get established and soil based organisms to potentiate the bacterial activity in the intestines. A healthy GI bacterial flora is thought to improve overall health and immune system function.

Get off the hormonal roller coaster!

http://smithfamilyresources.com/products/vitex

Vitex, also called chaste berry, is an herb, not a hormone.  The pituitary gland responds to it by raising progesterone levels.  Vitex is known for its ability to nourish and support the female endocrine system as it regulates estrogen and progesterone levels.

PMS and menstrual problems - cramps, flooding, headaches depression, water retention, constipation, acne, breast tenderness, and irritability - are all eased by this wonderful herb. Because Vitex helps regulate cycles, you can more accurately calculate the start of your next period. And as you transition towards menopause, your body will become estrogen-dominant, causing hot flashes, irregular cycles, depression, mood swings, and flooding. Enhanced with Dong Quai - a Chinese herb known for relieving menopausal symptoms - Beeyoutiful's Vitex addresses these mid-life problems.

For whatever natural reason they're out of equilibrium, Vitex is a vital aid to help re-balance your hormones so you can feel "normal" again. Be sure to give your body a minimum of three cycles and up to a year to soak in and respond to the hormone stabilizing work of Vitex. Because it is safe for long-term use, many women take Vitex for several years in a row if necessary. It is a great companion for all stages of being a woman.

Caution: Not for women who are pregnant or nursing. (Beeyoutiful's Vitex contains Dong Quai) This product effects hormone balance, and if there is a chance you may become pregnant or are trying to achieve conception we recommend only taking it from menstration until ovulation unless otherwise directed by a physician and our recommendation is that you do not take at all during pregnancy or nursing.
