Step Three: Make Household Soaps

Are you taking the Natural Year Challenge with me?
I hope you're having as much fun as I am!

I love my homemade laundry soap, and now I'm looking forward to
making dish soap, hand soap and automatic dishwashing powder.

Click here for recipes and helpful information from Andrea Fabry of Moms Aware, Inc.

In this video, Andrea shares her tips for making
all-natural liquid castile soap, dish soap, hand soap, and "rebatched" bar soap.
She's so encouraging! When I watch her do it, I feel like I can do it, too! J

Are you making your own products, too?
Please comment or email and tell me how it's going.  I love to hear from you!

Step Two: Making Laundry Soap

I finally took Step Two!  Tuesday afternoon, my son and I made homemade liquid laundry soap!

We followed the Moms Aware recipe...
  • First, we boiled 3 cups of water and dissolved 1 oz. of liquid castile soap in it.
  • Then we added ¼ cup of washing soda--at which point the water bubbled up and over the side of the pot.  This was unexpected, and we actually got a great laugh out of it.  We even laughed while we cleaned up the mess.  J
  • Next we added ¼ cup of borax.
  • We stirred until all was dissolved in the water.
Andrea Fabry suggested putting it in a 1-gallon glass jar.  I had saved a liquid detergent plastic container, the size that washes 96 loads.  We put 10 cups of water into that container and then poured in our soap mixture.  We shook it up and let it sit for 24 hours, waiting for it to form a liquid gel.

After 24 hours, it still hadn't formed a liquid gel, so I waited until this morning to wash clothes with the new detergent.

After 36 hours, when it still hadn't gelled, I decided to try it anyway.  I washed a load of whites in which there were some noticeably dirty white napkins.  They came clean!  And the whole load smelled fresh!  Success!

I then washed a colored load with some smelly shirts, and those also came clean and smelled great!

I calculate that I used less than $2 worth of cleaning supplies to make this batch of detergent.  It half-fills my 96-load container, so I assume I'll be able to wash at least 48 loads of laundry.  All it cost was a little effort and time, and it was so much fun to do it with my son!  It was definitely worth it!

(I updated our progress on making liquid laundry soap here.  We tweaked the recipe just a bit, so check it out!)

Now for Step Three...

“I know that Lauricidin has helped me and my family. I had been told by my chiropractor about its healing power but it wasn't until I tried it for myself that I became absolutely sold on it. I used to believe that the only thing that could knock out a bacterial infection was traditional antibiotics. I suffered from strep throat one summer several years ago that lead me to be on antibiotics for nearly two months. My immune system didn't seem to be the same after that because of how harsh those antibiotics were on my entire body. When I got terribly sick from bronchitis, I really feared that I would have to go see a doctor and he would prescribe antibiotics. This time I would take the advice of my chiropractor and take Lauricidin! To my absolute joy, the Lauricidin worked like a miracle!  Not only was the bacterial infection conquered, but my health was improved overall. Lauricidin heals the body so that the immune system is stronger than it was before, unlike all other antibiotics. Am I a fan of this product? Absolutely!  My family has been using it for about five years and now I never want to be without it. Lauricidin has saved me so much money over the years by not only healing me, but keeping me well.”

“I'm just getting over a cold.....I thought my daily use of Lauricidin would prevent me from catching one, but instead what has happened to me, at least, is what in so many around here is a lengthy and miserable head/chest affair took only 3 days total.  I upped my intake of Lauricidin from one scoop a day to 3, drank lots of water and got sleep.  Three days later, all symptoms are almost gone!  No one else I know around here who has had this bug has gotten over it that quick.  I'm attributing all to Lauricidin!

“But my biggest ‘testimonial’ would involve the disappearance of the fungal condition I contracted around age 11 in the Philippines, which I tried to get rid of through multiple doctors and medicines, but the condition would always come back....itchy, burning, very unpleasant!  When I began taking Lauricidin daily, about 1 year ago, I did it for the obvious general good health (and hopefully preventative) benefits it had.  After approximately 3-4 months, I realized I was not troubled with my old enemy ‘fungi,’ and have not been since!  That condition is as gone as it could be!  It has to be the Lauricidin because nothing else has changed either in diet or vitamin intake!”

Step Two

I haven't made much progress on Step Two.  Okay, I'll be honest.  Unless you count reading, I haven't made ANY progress on Step Two.

Here's a pic of my Step One accomplishment...

These lovely products are now sitting in my laundry room, waiting for me...

Meanwhile, I HAVE done some research.  My washer is HE, so I wanted to be sure that homemade detergent would work for me.  I found out that homemade detergents are low-sudsing which is very important for HE machines.  I think I'll start with the liquid recipe since we have very hard water here.  When I've used powdered detergent in my washer, it just hasn't dissolved very well.  I heard from a friend who said she thinks powder is better.  What do you think??
